Being a classroom teacher, you have some formal educational background in child development, early childhood education, and maybe behavior management. We have a toolbox of skills and tools that we have learned throughout our professional training.
However, what about parents and guardians?
This may be their first time as caregivers or navigating a child’s behavior. We can certainly help guide them, offer suggestions, and provide them with resources.
However, sometimes they need more than that. That is where an outside provider, like a certified PCIT therapist, may be helpful.
PCIT basically takes the behavior basics we, as teachers, use and packages them into language and phases that parents/guardians can apply at home.
The basics
What is PCIT? PCIT stands for Parent-Child Interaction Therapy.
This evidence-based program coaches parents/guardians through two phases across multiple sessions to help decrease maladaptive behaviors.
PCIT therapists typically provide services in the clinic, but they can also do it at home.
PCIT providers are mental health providers who have received an additional PCIT certification after completing the required training.
How it works
PCIT is split into two phases. Child Directed Interaction Phase (CDI) and Parent Directed Interactive Phase (CDI)
CDI: During this phase, parents/guardians follow the child’s lead using PRIDE skills. This phase builds rapport, connection, and communication.
PDI: During this stage, parents/guardians apply behavior management strategies.
During both stages, the PCIT provider provides coaching and feedback to parents.
Typically, this is done using a two-way mirror or camera where PCIT therapists observe and coach one side.
At the same time, the parent or guardian interacts with the therapist via an earpiece and with their child.
PCIT is an excellent option for students with a good foundation of age-appropriate skills but struggle with their behaviors and emotional regulation both in and out of school.
I have seen many students and other families undergo the PCIT process and make dramatic gains.
